Believe it or not, my hair used to be pin-straight as a kid. I would be able to get out of the shower, brush it, and leave it alone without having to worry about a single curl or even frizziness. Those days are long gone and since then, my hair has been through a number of different phases. It went from pin-straight to wavy, super curly, back to wavy, and now it is transitioning back to a curlier phase. Through all of these transitions, I have changed up my curly hair routine and have always searched for one that will keep my hair looking best. This is my current routine!
Like I mentioned earlier, I have been through a few different trial and error periods searching for the perfect curly hair routine. Some of my favorite products that I have come across and swear-by are DevaCurl products. Unfortunately, I can’t get my hands on these in Bulgaria so I won’t be including them in this blog post.
Shampoo and Conditioner
I have used the OGX line for a few years now and it is one that I can find in Bulgaria in DM stores. They have so many different kinds of shampoos, conditioners, and other hair products. My favorite ones for curly hair are the Quenching + Coconut Curls Shampoo and Conditioner. This one is sometimes harder to find so I typically stick to the Renewing + Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo and Conditioner.
I do hair treatments about once a week or every 2 weeks depending on the condition of my hair. Every time it feels dry or damaged, I use the OLAPLEX Hair Perfector No. 3 treatment. It works to bond some split ends, strengthen, and soften your hair. I notice that my curls are extra voluminous for a couple of days after this treatment. It is a bit pricy for a small bottle, but you don’t need a lot and you don’t use it every day.
Styling Curly Hair
I have stuck to 2 styling products in my curly hair routine. Unfortunately, I can’t find these in Bulgaria so I always have my sister, mom, or dad bring me them when they come to visit. I like to use natural products with as little sulfates and chemicals as possible. These are perfect for that.
Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Original Leave-In Moisturizer
This stuff is heaven in a bottle. The Hair Milk has no parabens, mineral oil, artificial colors, or petroleum. It helps moisturize your curls, improve the softness of your hair, and prevent frizz. It has ingredients like agave, soybean oil, sweet almond oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter. After I wash and condition my hair, I gently towel dry or t-shirt dry my hair and apply a bit of this product using a scrunching technique. I don’t use too much because I have thin hair and it can look a bit oily if I use too much. It is perfect for styling or just enhancing your curls.
Coconut Shea Curl Defining Creme
After I put in the Hair Milk, I add this Curl Defining Creme, to add moisture, separate my curls, and strengthen my hair. This stuff is also humidity-resistant (perfect since I live by the beach and the humidity can get out of control), fights frizz, and enhances the definition of your hair.
In the summer, I typically let my hair air-dry or if I am really in a hurry I will blow dry it using a diffuser. Anytime that I blow dry my hair, I have to use a diffuser. It enhances the curls and adds volume which is needed with any kind of curly hair.
This is about it for my curly hair routine. It’s not much, but it is what works (for now)!
