I have a love-hate relationship with working out. Overall, I love it…I just hate finding the motivation to get up and do it. That’s why I would resort to fun ways of doing it like cheerleading when I was in high school/college. For the past few years, I have been doing either home workouts or going to the gym. Whatever it is that I am doing, I always make sure that I bring my workout essentials with me. It’s not much, but they are must-haves for me.
Whether you are just starting your fitness journey or have been into it for a while, I feel like these are necessities for everyone.
1. Comfy Workout Clothes + Shoes
Of course, in order to get a good workout in, you need to be comfortable. I have so many workout clothes from my cheerleading days and from a bunch of athleisure lines because these were my go-to comfy clothes. I also have a wide selection of workout shoes because I worked at Foot Locker for many years and had/have a sneaker obsession.
My workout clothes usually consist of a sports bra, Lulu Lemon leggings (shorts if it’s summer), a breathable tank, t-shirt, or dri-fit long sleeve, and some comfy sneakers. I usually stick to either Nike or Adidas, but there are other brands that are really comfortable.
Many people prefer to workout in silence…that’s not my thing at all. I need something to distract me and motivate me at the same time. I use AirPods and personally, I think these are the best headphones for working out. They are small, lightweight, and wireless.
3. Personal Hygiene Products
Please, please, please be aware of your personal hygiene when working out. These are my top workout essentials because no one wants to work out next to someone who smells funky. I always put on deodorant and perfume before a workout and bring some with me too. Plus, shower after and use it!!!
I use men’s deodorant – no, I don’t find that weird. I’ve been using it since 10thgrade I think. Personally, I think it works better, it’s cheaper, and there was something about cancer-causing chemicals in women’s deodorants, but I can’t remember if that was a myth or not.
Also, hand sanitizer! If you’re going to the gym, you’re going to be touching all of the equipment and even though there might be wipes, it’s better to be safe and germ-free. That’s why I always bring some with me.
4. Water Bottle
You’ve got to stay hydrated and bringing water is key. If you can, try getting a reusable gym water bottle and avoid using plastic. Many gyms have stations where you can refill your water, too!
5. Fitness Tracker
If you are someone who likes tracking your workouts or use it as motivation, getting an Apple Watch or a FitBit is something you should look into. I use the Nike app or the Health App on my iPhone. Depends on what I am tracking that day.
I like to make sure that I am prepared for my workouts and going through this small checklist of essentials is key for me.
